<p>My good friend and fellow art director <a href="My good friend and fellow art director Christian Williams signed up for the Boston Marathon. On April 16, 2012, I will be running the Boston Marathon for the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge (DFMC). I know what you’re thinking: “What, the marathon?! But you haven’t run more than three miles in your entire life!” And isn’t this going to hurt your back? While those statements may be true, I have found a reason that makes it all worthwhile. Last summer I lost another close family friend to cancer. That makes five family members or friends in as many years. Whether I had been lucky in years prior or simply walking through life with blinders, I hadn’t really felt touched by cancer. But now, I can’t seem to avoid it. The reality is that 1 in 3 men and 1 in 2 women will be diagnosed with cancer. If you let that statistic sink in for a moment, I’m sure you can see how cancer, if it has not already done so, is poised to impact your family like it has mine. I come from a family of 3 men and 2 women, which means that for me, cancer is likely waiting for 2 members of my family. That is a very frightening and motivating fact and is the primary reason that when I decided to run the Boston Marathon this year I reached out to only one team. “Dedicated to Discovery. Committed to Care.” This is the mission of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, described as “one of the world’s premier cancer centers” by the National Cancer Institute. Founded in 1947 by Sidney Farber, MD, DFCI is renowned for its unique blend of basic and clinical research, and for using its discoveries to improve the treatment of adults and children with cancer. This year, 100% of the donations I raise will go towards Dana-Farber’s Claudia Adams Barr Program in Innovative Basic Cancer Research. The Barr Program is widely recognized as one of the largest and most successful programs of its kind. Based on a rigorous and highly selective process, the Barr Program funds the brightest, most creative scientists making basic research discoveries that are transforming cancer treatment. Barr Investigators have made numerous major breakthroughs resulting in improved survival rates and quality of life for thousands of patients everywhere. I run in honor of friends and family who are no longer with us. I run for those currently fighting cancer. And I run for those who will battle cancer in the future. I have set an aggressive goal of raising $9000 and hope that I can reach it with your help. Sponsoring me is easy and only takes a few minutes. Just visit my contribution page http://www.runDFMC.org/2012/christianw or send a check made out to DFMC directly to me at 8 Pembroke Street, Apt 1, Chelsea, MA 02150. Please remember to submit a matching fund request to your company to multiply your gift to DFMC.">Christian Williams</a> will be running the Boston Marathon on April 16 for the <a href="http://www.rundfmc.org/faf/donorReg/donorPledge.asp?ievent=484862&amp;lis=1&amp;kntae484862=3D22124CFC4F47408ACA6274AAF8B1F4&amp;supId=343526725" target="_blank">Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge (DFMC)</a>. I&#8217;ve known Christian for about 6+ years and therefore I know this is a HUGE challenge for him, (he practically hates running.) BUT I also know that he is very determined, which means he will succeed even if he&#8217;s crawling across the finish line. Using his art director skills he created a great little <a href="http://makemyfeetgo.com/" target="_blank">campaign/site</a> for his journey. And he&#8217;s challenging all of us to donate at least five dollars. &#8220;Five dollars. It’s not a lot to part with. We spend almost that much a day on coffee. Five dollars may not seem like a lot. But, if enough people contribute…five dollars will add up quickly. In addition to knowing that you’ve contributed to one of the nations leading cancer institutes I’ll also go ahead and send you one of the buttons shown below. Please do you part and spread the word. Together We Can.&#8221;</p>
<p>Please <a href="http://www.rundfmc.org/faf/donorReg/donorPledge.asp?ievent=484862&amp;lis=1&amp;kntae484862=3D22124CFC4F47408ACA6274AAF8B1F4&amp;supId=343526725" target="_blank">donate</a> if you can and spread the word because every bit helps.
