The Ruins of Detroit

Friday, January 7th, 2011

We have all heard jokes about Detroit and it’s woeful ways as a city. Fact is, the city of Detroit has become synonomis with failure. But, what I’m sure most of us don’t realize is that Detroit was once home to some of the most amazing structures in the country. Remarkably and thankfully, most of these structures are still standing and waiting for an unforseen day when they can be brought back to splendor.

This decay has been wonderfully captured by photographers Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre.

My Dream House

Friday, January 7th, 2011

If you happen to follow any home/architecture blogs you will have surely seen this house. Not long ago this home designed by Widjedal Racki Bergerhoff from Stockholm was a blog sensation.

For me personally, it’s still a sensation. This home brought to life many of the traits I have always  looked  for in a home. Simple, clean, efficient, and most importantly, it blurred the lines between the interior and exterior of the home.

MAKE Sign

Tuesday, January 4th, 2011

This past week I happened to find myself in an old abandonded fire station. Within it, I came across an old slate chalkboard. It was heavy, a bit ricketty, and fire engine red. I loved it immediately. More importantly, I knew right away what I had in store for it.

I’ll be the first to admit that I did draw inspiration from one of my absolute favorite design shops,…the things makers from Portland, Oregon….Official Manufacturing Co.

one year + giveaway

Friday, December 3rd, 2010

I can hardly believe it, but it’s been one year since I started fancy seeing you here. So much has happened since then.…I’ve written more than I ever thought I would—137 posts to be exact. I’ve set up my etsy shop. Oh, and one other little thing, I got the guts to quit my job. It’s really been the best year and I look forward to expanding my blog and my shop. Thanks for coming along for the ride.

As a thank you, I’m giving away a set of  letterpressed cards from my shop to one lucky reader. Just leave a comment on your favorite post so far. I’ll announce the winner next week.

home sweet home

Wednesday, December 1st, 2010

I just bought this Home Sweet Home print by Seb Lester on Keep Calm Gallery. Let’s just say it was an early Christmas present to myself. I had a hard time deciding between the Home Sweet Home print and the Stars print below, but I ended up deciding on the Home Sweet Home print because of its unique color changing paper, (see the video of its magic-ness here.) Keep Calm Gallery has a great selection of prints, tea towels and other great designed pieces that make great gifts. And definitely check out Seb Lester’s website—he’s a typography genius.

happ & stahns perfume packaging

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

I stumbled upon this perfume at the Anthropologie accessories store just the other day. It’s the cutest box and bottle…every single detail is just perfect. I especially love the pincushion top on the bottle. I was sooo close to buying it just for the packaging—I don’t even think I smelled it—but thankfully I came to my senses. Purchase it for yourself at Anthropologie here and here. It’d make a great gift for a perfume lover.

p.s. If you live in the DC area you must check out the Anthropologie accessories store in Chevy Chase—it’s to die for.

playbutton

Friday, November 19th, 2010

Playbutton is a wearable button that plays music: a record that plays itself. What a great idea! Who would I be wearing right now? I think Florence + the Machine and the new Girl Talk album. Can’t wait to see which band will be the first to try this out.
