Public Gothic and How to Sell a Font

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

I’m not a freak about typography like many designers but I do get excited about great packaging. This morning while on Lovely Package I found myself duped by Antrepo. At first glance I thought I was admiring some gorgeous retro inspired oil cans. But, after closer inspection I discovered that I was in fact looking at a gorgeous sales pitch for their font Public Gothic.  Maybe there is something to this typography thing after all.

Tuetels Schmuetels | Shaw Speed & Custom

In my search for a pair of boots I’ll confess that I actually googled ‘Steve McQueen Boots’. While I didn’t particular like any of the boots he was fond of wearing, it did send me down the internet rabbit hole into the world of motorcycles.

I have a very brief history with motorcycles. I owned a 50cc mini bike as a child and was about as close a person can be to purchasing a motorcycle 6 months ago. I had a trailer on the back of my truck and cash in my pocket. If not for a transmission that began hemorraging in front of the motorcycle owners home I would own it now. As it turned out, I moved, I bought a boat, and I haven’t thought about a motorcycle since.

This bike from England’s Shaw Speed & Custom is just the sort of motorcycle that could get me thinking about another purchase.

Oakstreet Bootmakers

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011

I’ve been on a bit of a quest of late to find a pair of boots that will get me through 3 seasons of unpredictable weather here in New England. Along with the weather, I’ve been hoping to find a pair that will be as functional on my boat as they would be in a nice restaurant.

The current frontrunner in my personal boot derby is a pair from Chicago bootmaker Oakstreet Bootmakers.   While they are ungodly expensive I  subsribe to the philosphy of buy the right things, not a lot of things. So, I’m willing to fork over the money that will last me years to come.

Also, under heavy consideration is the Wabasha boot from Redwing.

before and after: tv stand

Monday, April 18th, 2011

This is a revamp of one of the pieces that I picked up at this year’s trash or treasure, (which was last weekend.) I’ve been looking for a new tv stand for quite some time now for my living room and haven’t had much luck. The CB2 one (here is the green version) that I had originally thought would look nice in the space was sold out before I got the chance to purchase it and now they don’t carry it in white anymore. So at trash or treasure I set out looking for something that would work as a tv stand or be converted to a tv stand. Luckily I found a low bureau that I thought could be updated nicely.

before:

This bureau was a little too tall as is to be used for a tv stand. So me and my dad eliminated one layer of drawers to make it the perfect height. The top two drawers were then removed to make a place for my vcr and satellite box. (These drawers can be added back in the future if I decide to use this piece as something besides a tv stand.)

after:

I couldn’t be happier with the results. I think it looks really nice, fits the space, holds my electronics and best of all—it was free! All I need to do now is update the hardware…I’m thinking these beauties from Anthropologie in Palace Yell0w will be perfect finish to the piece.
