One of my favorite stops during the San Fran trip was the Musee Mecanique, which is one of the world’s largest privately owned collections of mechanically operated musical instruments and antique arcade machines. (Just a warning, the website is really scary and is not a fair representation of the collection at all.) All of the games and musical instruments were amazing eye candy especially for a designer; amazing typography and imagery…in hind sight I am actually a little disappointed that I didn’t take more photographs. And the best part is there are only 25 cents to play. The collection also contains two miniature portrait booths (aka old school photobooths, not the yucky digital ones) that we posed in for 4 sessions. It was so much fun and just the start of an obsessive hunt to find every photobooth in the city.

Musee Mecanique is a must see if you are visiting San Fran!

This past week I went to visit my bff and super talented photographer extraordinaire Christine who lives in San Francisco. This was my first visit to San Fran and let me tell you, I fell in love, real hard. It was just as amazing as everyone says it is, plus more. It was extremely walkable, super artsy and full of great inspiration from old signage, fabulous architecture, wacky costume shops, lots of photo booths, sea lions, magnificent bridges, really crooked streets and the freshest food. sigh…i already miss you San Fran. To my viewers, please bear with me, the next few posts are going to be some of the highlights from my trip.

dc flea market

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

I attended the DC Big Flea Market over the weekend with my friend Alison and boy was there tons of great stuff. I walked away with some vintage buttons, wood type, a burlap sac, two Japanese paper mache trays and some gifts for my mom. Here’s a few pics from the trip.

letterpress1

I recently participated in a limited edition letterpressed calendar with 15 talented designers/printers. Each page was designed by a different person. I designed the month of May. The project is a fundraiser for Pyramid Atlantic Art Center in Silver Spring, MD.

See more photos from the project here and here.

There are still a couple left for purchase here.

dreaming of three-wheeled bicycles

Last summer I attended an antique market in Leesburg, VA. At one of the shops there was a three-wheeled bicycle for sale, (almost exactly like this one!) and I am still mad at myself for not buying it. I can just picture myself riding around Bethesda, wearing a full skirted, flowery 60s dress and getting groceries or heading to the farmers market. Maybe someday…

what inspires you?

inspir_sah

What inspires you? Recently I was asked to handwrite the answer to this question on a blank piece of paper for a internal work project. (I’ll update you later with the final project from all of these answers.) It’s a hard question for me to answer because I feel like I am inspired by pretty much everything! Anything from patterns in nature to a beautiful photo from a wedding to marc jacobs new collection—it all gets my wheels turning. All in all, I felt like I gave a nice summary of some of my favorite everyday sources.

I also keep monthly inspiration folders on my desktop to house anything and everything that tickles my fancy. Problem is I didn’t keep track of the sources for these images. (I’ll try to fix that this year.) The monthly folders are a great way for me to see design trends and they serve as a great reference if I need inspiration fast. Here are some of my favorites from 2009.

And now I’m dying to know what inspires you? Any daily rituals before you starting creating? Please share…

fair isle sweater clock

clock

I recently saw this clock hanging in Anthropologie and it was love at first sight. The price was a little hefty though, well at least for me, a whopping $398.00. Recently I noticed that it went on sale and even though it was still a little expensive I was tempted because I thought it was adorable and soo unique. Well long story short I randomly went into an Anthro store over the weekend and discovered that they are relocating the store and therefore all the sale items were an extra 40% off. Right then, I knew that it was meant to be.

Now to find a safe location to hang the clock, where my two mischievous kitties can’t attack the hanging pendulums.

If you are interested there are actually four different sweater clock options on the Anthropologie site: one, two, three and four.

I’ve never really written new year’s resolutions in the past, but I have a good feeling about 2010 so I decided this would be a good year to start. I am looking forward to this year as fresh start to reinventing myself and focusing on what i want. I am putting these resolutions out there so that all of you, (if there are any people reading this) can hold me to these goals. Here they are, in no particular order:

1 blog blog blog

2 photograph my work

3 craft shows

4 spending hiatus: 3 months without buying anything non-essential. more to come on this later.

5 organize craft room

6 exercise

7 meditate regularly

8 let go of the past

9 take chances

10 do at least 3 things for myself every single day

11 be green

If you are having a hard time writing your own here’s a resolution generator to help.
