Design is the key

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

A beautiful self-promotion piece by Kanella. The piece consists of four handcrafted embossed and woven cards that reveal a secret message “Design is the Key to the Path towards the Sun.” The whole project is based on the story of Ariadne (read story here) and her thread which has been adapted and now it focuses on the importance of good taste. I love the combination of textures and techniques that these cards use; so simple and so lush at the same time. Makes me want to experiment using some embroidered techniques for my own card designs.

edge painting

Friday, May 7th, 2010

I’ve been dying to try this technique on a letterpress project and just haven’t gotten around to it. I think that edge painting makes such a dramatic statement. And it’s a great way to add a pop of color.

Ok, for the record, I am hear by saying that my next letterpress project I am trying this.

Some of the resources that I have found to help you with this technique: Briar Press & Crane & Co. Please share any advice if you have any experience in edge-painting. Thanks!

Over the weekend I picked up a cardboard deer trophy on clearance at Urban Outfitters. (These aren’t available on the UO site, but they are available here plus they have rhinos and buffalo.) Anyway, I purchased the deer trophy thinking I could personalize it to make it more original and of course fancier. I modpodged newspaper on one side of the cardboard and painted the other side a robin’s egg blue. This process actually took a few days. The most time consuming part was triming the newspaper around the pieces because I wanted to still be able to see the corragated edges. For the actual trophy plaque I attached wood veneer and stained it. I love the way Bucky turned out—very graphic and bold with the subtle blue touches. Now I am trying to decide if I need the rhino to accompany Bucky on the wall.

svpply

I just discovered svpply via Jessica Hische’s blog Mostly Useless Things I Want, (which is no longer being updated since she got a svpply invite.) Anyway svpply is retail bookmarking and recommendation service. Members, which are invite only, can create wishlists. (You can check out Jessica’s wishlist here.) Basically, this is a great site to find tons of cool stuff that you really don’t need. None the less, I’ll be using this site for inspiration, gifts and the occasional splurge for myself.

Stunning illustrations by self-taught illustrator Raphael of My Dead Pony. These are my two favorites, but there is plenty more eye candy on his site. I think I might need a print of the top one, “Come Home Little Soul.” You can purchase prints of his artwork directly from his site or here.
