Peru (part 2: the trek)

The main highlight of my trip to Peru was the Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu through SAS Travel that I did with my friend Nicole. We picked this trek because it’s a little more difficult than the Inca Trail and less traveled. We had two trek mates from Australia, Peter and Marie who were just lovely to share this experience with as well as our guide, Ruben and 5 porters (cook, ass. cook, waiter, horse wrangler and ass. horse wrangler.) The picture above is the beginning of the trek. You can see the gorgeous glacier in the background which is where we were headed. The first day was completely uphill and got a lot colder as we went. By the time we made it to our campsite it was raining which later in the night turned to snow. It was absolutely amazing waking up to the snow (and rare according to our guide. He had only seen snow about twice before and he’s been doing the trek for 12 years now!) The beginning of the second day we continued upward to reach our highest point at 4600m on Abra Salkantay mountain. During this time I was experiencing some altitude sickness which made the morning 4 hour hike miserable. This didn’t take away from the beauty of hiking through the snow. The third picture below is at the top of the Abra Salkantay. You can see the rock offerings given by all the people that have made this trek. The last picture is Mount Salkantay which is Cusco’s second highest peak at 6,264m.

More pictures to come tomorrow!

Peru (part 1: Cusco)

I’m sure you’ve all been wondering where I have been. I recently went on vacation to Peru starting in the city of Cusco and then doing a 5 day Salkantay hike to Machu Picchu. It was an amazing adventure. Here are some of my favorite pictures from walking around the city of Cusco. The city was so rich with bright colors, beautiful architecture and great hand drawn type. More pictures from my trip to come soon.

dexter

Dexter on Showtime is by far one of my favorite shows. I love that the show has the ability to make the audience relate to and feel compassionate for a serial killer. Ty Mattson created a great poster series inspired by the show—one poster for each season. (Season 4 was my favorite season and favorite poster!) Prints will be available soon on the Showtime website.

girl crush: carey mulligan

Isn’t she just stunning? Such a classic, timeless beauty…I’m about this close to chopping my hair off because of her.

apples & pumpkins

Over the weekend me and my sister went apple picking in Northern Virginia. Since then we’ve been busy baking three apple pies, two apple crisps, apple bread and apple muffins. AND we still have apples left. We couldn’t believe that all the apples were only $8! Don’t worry we aren’t going to eat all of these baked goodies by ourselves, most of them will be frozen to take home for Thanksgiving.

We also stopped at a farm stand and picked out some pumpkins for carving once it gets closer to Halloween.

diy vintage suitcase pet bed

I’ve been wanting to make a vintage suitcase pet bed ever since seeing this post on modern cat. It took me a while to find the right suitcase, but other than that it was a very simple and quick assembly which only took me a couple hours in front of the tv to make the base and then a quick half an hour at the sewing machine to make the cushion. My cats seem to like it and regardless I think it looks nice even if they decide that they don’t want to use it. My cat Annie Oakley is the one featured above.

Supplies:

• Vintage Suitcase

5″ Round Taper Table Legs (4 total)

Angle Top Plate (4 total)

• Additional screws (The screws that came with the angle top plate were too long and poking through the suitcase, so I had to get shorter screws at the hardware store.)

• Craft glue

• Paint and paintbrush

• fabric and fill

• tools: screwdriver, hammer

1. To start I separated the lid from the base of the suitcase by removing the pin from the hinges. I used a hammer and nail to force the pin out and then removed it the rest of the way with pliers.

2. Carefully cut the fabric that connects the lid to the base of the suitcase and fold it down into the base. I used craft glue to keep the extra fabric in place.

3. Next I attached the angle plates to the bottom of the suitcase, one in each corner. Like I mentioned in the supplies, the screws that came with the plates were too long so I had to get much shorter ones at the hardware store. The legs screw right into the base.

4. I painted the legs to match my fabric and then screwed them into the plates to dry. 2 coats total and I taped off the brass on the legs for a clean edge.

5. I made a simple custom cushion, but in hindsight I think I could’ve purchased a regular pillow and made a case for it.

I’m really happy with the results. I love having a unique pet bed that is also eco-friendly. Hopefully my cats enjoy it too!

crafty bastards recap 2

RAR RAR press has been one of the vendors I always look forward to every year at Crafty Bastards. She creates really bold (to say the least) letterpress postcards and posters.

The handmade leather accessories from Eve VanDalsen were absolutely stunning!

Power + Light Press had gorgeous and clever letterpress goodies.

My favorite vendor this year was Peg and Awl. They really designed every inch of their booth to suit their items made from reclaimed materials; book necklaces, bookends, picture frames, candle holders, etc. Great stuff.

An awesome Crafty Bastards…hopefully next year I’ll be amongst these guys with my very own booth!
